About GST in India

What is GST?

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is an indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India. It replaced multiple cascading taxes and created a unified tax structure across the country.

GST Tax Rates (2025 New Structure)

🎉 Major Update: Simplified Two-Tier Rate Structure

As of September 2025, India's GST has been restructured into a simpler two-tier system. 99% of items from 12% slab moved to 5%, and 90% from 28% slab moved to 18%.

  • 0% Exempt items - Essential food items like paneer, roti, pizza bread
  • 5% Merit rate - Daily essentials, agricultural equipment, healthcare services (most items from old 12% slab)
  • 18% Standard rate - Most goods and services, automobiles and electronics (reduced from 28%)
  • 40% Sin goods - Luxury items, tobacco, and other sin goods (replaces old 28% + cess)

Note: Legacy rates (12% and 28%) may still apply to some transition items. Use the calculator for accurate results.

Components of GST

  • CGST (Central GST) - Tax collected by the Central Government (50% of total GST)
  • SGST (State GST) - Tax collected by the State Government (50% of total GST)
  • IGST (Integrated GST) - Applied on inter-state transactions

How to Calculate GST

Adding GST: Final Amount = Original Amount + (Original Amount × GST Rate / 100)

Removing GST: Original Amount = Total Amount / (1 + GST Rate / 100)

Example Calculation

If you have a product costing ₹1,000 with 18% GST:
• GST Amount = ₹1,000 × 18/100 = ₹180
• CGST = ₹90 (50% of GST)
• SGST = ₹90 (50% of GST)
• Total Amount = ₹1,000 + ₹180 = ₹1,180
